RIDE DAY 2 TUESDAY 13TH MAY.
ZION
LODGE TO RUBYS INN BRYCE CANYON
In Zion canyon private vehicles
are not alloed to drive beyond the Lodge and the park provides a very efficient
shuttle bus service into the canyon with stops at the
start of each trail. We got up early and took the shuttle to the Weeping Rock
trail, this walk only takes 20 minutes and takes you to the canyon wall where
the water that has soaked through the sandstone until it reaches the shale rock
layer at which point the water which has taked as much as 1200 years to filter
through weeps out of the rock face providing the irrigation for magnificent
hanging gardens.
After Breakfast we headed out of
the park on the most fantastic twisting scenic road on our route to Bryce Canyon
National Park. The main lodge at Bryce was fully booked and so we were all
staying at Ruby's Inn at the park entrance.
The ride in the morning took us
up into the mountains above Cedar City. As we rode above 6000 feet it became
increasingly cold and we began seeing snow at the side of the road, As we
climbed higher the temperature dropped further and we were soon passing frozen
lakes and steeply banked snow. Brenda had started the ride today filming with
our DVD camera and had put her gloves in the top box of the bike, subsequently
her hands were now turning blue and as I only had a short sleeved shirt under my
jacket I was pretty cold as well. Fortunately everyone was feeling the same way
and we all pulled off the road into a parking area to put some more clothing on.
The offers of iced water from our chase care were politely refused. We hastened
off again as we had a pre-arranged lunch in Cedar City as guests of the Utah
Shakespeare festival theatre. From our halt the road wound quickly down warming
up with each thousand feet that we dropped. By the time we got to Cedar City we
were sufficiently thawed out to enjoy a magnificent outdoor barbecue in the
grounds of the theatre. The students and staff wre waiting for us as we pulled
up and ave us a huge cheer which was itself very warming.
Following lunch we were given a
grand tour of the theatre and its workshops. For a group of theatre
practitioners this was very interesting. We gassed up and headed for Bryce
canyon, upon arrival at Ruby's Inn in the late afternoon it was decided that we
would head of to visit the Lodge and the Canyon itself. Brenda and I decided
that we had ridden enough for the day and opted to ride Robert and Scott in the
Chase Van, we got a couple of odd looks from the hardened bikers but i have to
tell you that it was very comfortable and warm in the van. Bryce Canyon is
magnificent, our pictures cannot do it justice you will just have to visit it
yourselves.
Ruby's Inn were one of our
sponsors and provided a free buffet dinner for us all.
